17-year-old Alfie Pinder is studying Level 3 Graphic Design & Illustration, and here he talks about his experience of his first week as a Hull College student…
Choosing to study at the college was a no-brainer for me. I'd heard nothing but good things from my friends who had opted to come here a year earlier than me as I chose to do English, Photography and Geography at Archbishop Sentamu last year.
I've hit the ground running since starting my course, and I'm genuinely proud of the progress I've made already. Even my mum couldn't contain her excitement - already posting about my achievements on Facebook, proudly declaring, "Look at my boy go!"
The number of people interested in and studying Graphic Design has been pleasantly surprising. I've come across plenty who are passionate about other creative fields like photography and art in the past, but not so many when it comes to Graphic Design. However, being surrounded by a room full of individuals who share my passion has been a breath of fresh air. It's incredibly inspiring to be in the company of like-minded people, exchanging ideas and pushing creative boundaries.
My tutor Kev has been amazing from day one - although don't tell him I said that! He's a brilliant teacher and has been so supportive of everyone in the group throughout the first week. He encourages us to dive into our work while always being there to lend a helping hand or provide advice when needed.
Looking ahead to the upcoming year, I'm eager to embrace all the challenges that lie ahead. I always knew that studying Graphic Design would be challenging, but I’m someone who thrives on challenges - doing so only helps to develop your skills even further. I genuinely can't wait to see how much I can progress throughout the duration of this two-year course.
