What We Expect

Attendance, Behaviour & Expectations

Helping students build the attendance, behaviour and independence they need to succeed at college and beyond.

Attendance Matters

Students are expected to attend all timetabled lessons, tutorials and required activities throughout the year. Consistent attendance plays a vital role in academic success, helping students stay engaged with their studies and make the most of every opportunity available to them.

Good attendance also helps students develop the reliability, commitment and professionalism that employers and universities value highly. Missing lessons can make it difficult to catch up, which is why attendance is monitored carefully and concerns are followed up.

If Attendance Becomes a Concern

We understand that there are times when students may face challenges that affect their attendance or motivation. If concerns arise, we aim to identify them early and provide the right support.

Students may be contacted by their Personal Tutor, and where appropriate, parents or guardians may also be informed. Support plans, wellbeing support and additional guidance can be put in place to help students get back on track before problems become more serious.

Parents may be contacted if attendance falls significantly, if a pattern of absence develops, or where there are welfare or safeguarding concerns.

Positive Behaviour and Professionalism

All students at Hull College are expected to:

  • Treat others with kindness and respect.
  • Behave professionally and responsibly.
  • Follow college rules and expectations.
  • Contribute positively to the college community.
  • Create an inclusive environment where everyone feels safe and supported.

These expectations help create a positive learning environment and prepare students for life beyond college.

Knowing Your Young Person May Be Struggling

Sometimes attendance or behaviour issues are linked to wider concerns. Signs that a student may need additional support can include:

  • Frequent absences.
  • Loss of motivation.
  • Anxiety about attending college.
  • Changes in mood or behaviour.
  • Falling behind with coursework or assignments.

If you notice any of these signs, we encourage you to seek support early. Small concerns are often easier to address before they become bigger challenges.

How You Can Help

Parents and guardians continue to play an important role during a student’s time at college. You can support your young person by:

  • Encouraging good routines and regular attendance.
  • Talking about their goals and aspirations.
  • Maintaining communication with the college.
  • Raising concerns as early as possible.
  • Encouraging them to seek support when needed.

We’re Here to Help

A common misconception is that attendance is optional at college or that occasional absences do not matter. In reality, attendance remains a key part of student success, and we take concerns seriously.

If your young person is refusing to attend, losing motivation, or becoming disengaged, please contact their Personal Tutor or the Learner Services Team at learner.services@hull-college.ac.uk as soon as possible.

By working together, we can provide the support needed to help students regain confidence, stay engaged and achieve their full potential.
