Preparing Your Young Person for Work

Student Work Experience

Work experience is an important part of life at Hull College and plays a valuable role in helping students prepare for their future careers.

Why Work Experience Matters

Work experience allows students to:

  • Develop communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills.
  • Build confidence in professional environments.
  • Apply classroom learning in real workplace situations.
  • Explore career interests and future opportunities.
  • Develop the attitudes and behaviours employers value.
  • Strengthen applications for apprenticeships, university and employment.

For many students, work experience helps confirm career ambitions, while for others it opens doors to opportunities they may not have previously considered.

Work Experience as Part of Study Programmes

Most full-time students are expected to complete a minimum of 30 hours of work experience during their studies. Depending on the course, this may take place with an employer, through projects and industry activities, or through opportunities within the college itself.

Students studying advanced technical programmes, including T Levels, may complete much longer industry placements, often exceeding 300 hours, providing substantial experience within their chosen sector.

Finding a Placement

Our dedicated Work Experience Team works closely with local employers and industry partners to help students secure meaningful placements that complement their studies and career goals.

Students are also welcome to arrange their own placements if they have an employer in mind. In these cases, our team will work with the employer to ensure all necessary checks and arrangements are completed before the placement begins.

Keeping Students Safe

The safety and wellbeing of our students is always our priority.

All work experience placements are subject to appropriate safeguarding, health and safety and risk assessment checks before students begin. This helps ensure placements provide a safe, supportive and positive learning environment.

Our Work Experience Team remains available throughout the placement to provide guidance and support to both students and employers where required.

Supporting Your Young Person

Parents and guardians play an important role in helping students get the most from their work experience opportunities.

Encouraging punctuality, professionalism and a positive attitude can make a significant difference to a student’s confidence and success in the workplace.

These experiences often become an important stepping stone towards future employment, apprenticeships or higher education.
