Cranswick Brings the Importance of Core Skills to Life for Automotive and Engineering Students

Automotive and Engineering students at Hull College have gained valuable insight into the importance of Maths and English in the workplace after welcoming Keith McCrorie from Cranswick for an industry-focused session.

Keith shared his experience from an employer’s perspective, helping students understand how Core Skills are used every day in highly skilled technical roles and why they are so important to employers across industry.

The session gave learners the opportunity to look beyond the classroom and make a direct connection between their Core Skills studies and the careers they are working towards.

From using Maths to support accuracy, measurements and problem-solving to using English for communication, understanding technical information and working effectively with others, students explored how these skills form an important part of everyday working life.

Level 2 Automotive student GG said hearing directly from an employer helped bring the importance of Core Skills to life.

He said: “I really enjoyed Keith’s talk and it was great to hear directly from an employer about what industry is looking for. It really made sense why Core Skills are so important and how Maths and English are used every day in highly skilled technical jobs.

“Hearing it from an employer really brought it to life and showed why these skills matter for our future careers.”

Sessions like this give students the opportunity to hear directly from employers and understand the expectations of the industries they could go on to work in.
