Just two weeks into the new academic year, more than 200 Hull College students are already celebrating an important milestone after achieving their first certification in Hair, Barbering, Nails, and Beauty.
The students came together on Monday 14th September for an early engagement event hosted by our Hospitality and Lifestyle team, with a series of talks and sessions led by Emma Matakki, co-owner of professional scissors brand Matakki.
The event gave students the opportunity to hear directly from an industry professional and explore the skills, knowledge and professional standards they’ll need as they progress towards careers in the industry.
Emma shared valuable advice and practical insight across a range of topics, including preventing cross-infection and understanding skin conditions, as well as the servicing and maintenance of professional hair equipment. Students also explored workplace risk assessments, ergonomics and user health, alongside employability and the core skills they’ll need in the workplace.
For Emma, working with students is about much more than demonstrating professional techniques.
She said: “For me, education is about so much more than demonstrating a technique. It’s about sharing knowledge, challenging standards, encouraging confidence and helping learners understand what it really means to become a professional beautician, hairdresser, or barber.”
Emma’s sessions gave students an insight into the expectations of working in the industry, while helping them understand how the knowledge they’re developing at college connects with life in the workplace.
She added: “Being able to combine my passion for education with the Matakki brand is something I’m incredibly proud of. Every college visit and every individual session gives me another opportunity to inspire, support and invest in the future of our industry.”
With their first certification already under their belts, the event marked an exciting early achievement for the students and gave them the chance to connect their learning with the realities of professional life.
