There were more than 46,000 hair and beauty businesses operating in the UK in 2021, a 3% rise on the previous year.

According to data gathered by the Office for National Statistics, there were 44,880 beauty and hairdressing businesses operating in the UK in March 2020, with 3,690 of those in Yorkshire and the Humber.

65% of people who worked in beauty in 2020 were self-employed (up from 57% in 2019).

In 2021, 93% of the nail technician workforce was female and 7% was male. 16% of nail and beauty business managers were male.

ENGLISH AND MATHS

English and maths are important life skills that will help you to succeed in your education, career and everyday life.

If you have not yet achieved your Grade 4 in the new GCSE examinations or a Grade C in the old GCSE examinations, in either English and/or maths, you will continue to study these subjects as part of your study programme to help you work towards this level, supported by our dedicated tutors.

As a renowned make-up artist with over a decade of accolades across many continents, Carla is celebrated for her wealth of knowledge, unique artistry and attention to detail. She has been honing her craft in both Melbourne and right across the United Kingdom and Europe for the last 12 years, which has seen her work with some of Australia’s leading make-up and fashion brands - including Kookai, Bonds, Champion, Dotti, Myer and Frank Body.

As one of the most sought-after makeup artists in the industry, Carla also expanded her business to include The Creative Directory - a network of Melbourne’s most talented freelance Makeup Artists and Hair Stylists. And it all began for Carla right here at Hull College, when she completed a diploma in Beauty Therapy back in 2008.

Reflecting on her time studying at the college, Carla said: "When I began studying at Hull College, I didn’t have an exact idea of where I wanted my career to go, however on the first make-up class, I found my real passion, I realised this is what I wanted to specialise in.
