Course Structure

The course runs over one academic year and is typically delivered full time across three to four days per week. You will take part in a combination of practical workshops and classroom-based learning, allowing you to develop both hands-on skills and underpinning knowledge. In practical sessions, you will learn how to prepare surfaces, apply plaster, fix plasterboard, and create decorative moulds. Classroom lessons focus on health and safety, communication, and core construction principles, helping you build a strong understanding of plastering techniques and the materials used in the industry. You will also complete mini-projects and realistic trade tasks that allow you to apply your learning in practical scenarios, supported by blended learning resources and detailed feedback to reinforce your understanding.

Assessment is continuous throughout the course and includes practical observations, knowledge tests, and project-based work, ensuring you develop both the competence and confidence needed to progress within the plastering trade.

Progression & Next Steps

After achieving this qualification, you can progress on to further training such as Level 2 study in solid plastering or dry lining, where you will develop advanced techniques, work to industry standards, and prepare for employment or an apprenticeship. Many people choose to move into a plastering apprenticeship, combining paid on-the-job training with continued study to gain industry-recognised qualifications and real workplace experience. You may also choose to enter employment in roles such as a plasterer’s labourer, construction site operative, or trainee plasterer, allowing you to build site-based experience while continuing to develop your skills.

With further training and experience, you could progress into roles including solid or fibrous plasterer, dry liner or ceiling fixer, renderer or decorative plastering specialist, site supervisor or construction team leader, or become a self-employed plastering contractor.
