Safe and Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) at Hull College

26.1.26

8:22 am

Starting this week, Hull College will introduce approved AI tools, including Microsoft Copilot Chat, to support learning. These tools will help our students develop essential digital skills, learn safely, and prepare for future careers where AI is already a key part of the workplace.

Why We Are Using AI

AI can enhance learning by helping students:

  • Access extra support when needed
  • Build problem-solving and critical thinking skills
  • Explore creative approaches to projects and assignments
Keeping Learners Safe

Student safety is our top priority. We follow guidance from the Department for Education (DfE), Jisc, and other trusted sources to ensure:

  • Only age-appropriate, education-approved tools are used
  • All AI activity within college systems is supervised
  • No personal or identifiable data is uploaded
  • Learners are taught to use AI ethically and transparently
Why This Matters

AI is transforming how we live and work. By 2030, it is expected to add £400 billion to the UK economy. Learning these skills now will help our students prepare for future jobs and opportunities.

How AI Will Be Used
  • Staff may use AI to help plan lessons or draft feedback, but only with anonymous student work.
  • Teachers always check AI outputs before sharing with learners.
  • Non-AI alternatives will always be available.

Age and Consent

All our learners are 16 and above. The tools we use are approved for education and safe for ages 14+. If you prefer your young person not to use these tools, please let us know at ai.info@hull-college.ac.uk.

Approved AI Tools

We use trusted, education-approved tools such as:

  • Microsoft Copilot Chat - AI assistant in Microsoft apps
  • Canva for Education - Design and creative projects
  • Microsoft Immersive Reader - Reading and accessibility
  • Microsoft Translator - Real-time translation
  • Adobe Firefly - Text-to-image and design
  • Adobe Express (Education) - Graphics and video editing

(All tools are education-licensed and do not train on student data.)

Data Protection

We follow UK data protection law (GDPR) and safeguarding rules:

  • No personal or identifiable data is uploaded into AI systems.
  • All tools are education-approved and do not use student data for training.
Important Note

Hull College uses only safe, education-approved AI tools within our systems. However, we cannot prevent learners from accessing other AI tools on personal devices outside college. We encourage parents and guardians to discuss safe and responsible AI use at home.
