Staff and students from The Institute of Building Technologies at Hull College have constructed a new reception counter for local charity Welcome House.

Students from a combination of Carpentry and Joinery (level 1) and Bench Joinery (level 2 & 3) courses worked on the project, manufacturing the counter from start to finish. After the work was completed, tutors then delivered, assembled and installed the  at Welcome House's offices located in Wright Street in the city centre last week.

It proved to be a fantastic experience for everyone involved, with the successful outcome coming as a result of a collective team effort. Even more impressive was the fact that the project was completed with a real focus on sustainability, as the majority of materials used were either recycled or upcycled.

Darren Storrer, Head of The Institute of Building Technologies, said: "To see the students using so many skills that they have learnt on their course in this project has been fantastic. They have built the counter from start to finish - just like in a real industry environment - so it’s a great achievement for them all.

"It's been an all levels project involving our students on the carpentry and joinery courses and one that has been an enjoyable one for everyone to be involved in. We had a set of drawings provided by the architect for the project - who is an ex-Hull College student - before we then scaled everything off before it was manufactured by our hard-working and talented students.

"It's great that the college is supporting the local community with projects like this. It's also been a fantastic experience and a real learning curve for all of the students that have been involved in the process. Another positive is that 90% of the material used to build the reception counter have been recycled as well."

With the reception area now complete, staff and students at The Institute of Building Technologies will look to start on structural works for the charity in the new term.
