Hull College is thrilled to announce that one of its talented 14-16 College students, Mason Cooper, has secured a coveted place at this year's prestigious First Story summer residential. This achievement is a testament to Mason's exceptional application and unwavering dedication to the First Story programme during the current academic year.
The highly anticipated residential event will be held from Monday 24th July to Friday 28th July 2023, at Arvon’s idyllic Lumb Bank writing centre in rural West Yorkshire. This annual gathering will unite 16 exceptional young writers from First Story schools across the United Kingdom, providing them with an immersive week of creative writing.
During the residential, 15-year-old Mason will have the extraordinary opportunity to live and write among fellow talented peers, fostering an environment of creative inspiration and collaboration, along with a space where new friendships can be forged.
The summer residential’s comprehensive itinerary includes engaging group creative writing workshops and invaluable one-to-one tutorials led by three acclaimed writers: John Berkavitch, Cecelia Knapp, and Testament. These esteemed mentors will provide guidance and expertise, enabling Mason to further refine his craft and explore new dimensions of storytelling and writing.
Mason said: “I'm delighted. It's a fantastic opportunity to go away and work with like-minded students and professional writers to develop my skills - I can't wait! I’ve really enjoyed being on the First Story programme this year. I'm a very creative person, although I wouldn't have said I was an extremely passionate writer before I started this project. But now, whenever I can, I try to write something. It's definitely a skill and passion that being involved in the First Story programme has developed and one that I’m keen to continue with.”
Hull College takes immense pride in Mason's achievement and the significance of this recognition within the First Story programme. Mason's selection is a testament to his exceptional talent, dedication, and the invaluable support and mentorship provided by the college and the First Story initiative. It is a true reflection of the nurturing environment that 14-16 College offers to its students, enabling them to thrive and pursue their passion for writing.
Alex Reveley, Head of 14-16 College, expressed his admiration for Mason's accomplishment and said: “We are incredibly proud of Mason's selection for a place at First Story’s Arvon summer residential. This is a fantastic opportunity, which he thoroughly deserves. The achievement showcases not only his remarkable talent but also his commitment to the craft of writing. We believe this opportunity will further inspire Mason to explore his creativity and achieve even greater heights in his writing journey.
“As an educational institution committed to fostering creative expression and nurturing young talent, 14-16 College and Hull College remains dedicated to supporting its students' growth and achievements. The college extends its heartfelt congratulations to Mason and everyone wishes him continued success in his writing endeavours.”
