What are foundations courses?

Foundation Learning is a range of introductory Level 1 study programmes for students who are at the beginning of their education journey or who may need additional support to succeed in traditional study.

With a strong focus on personal development, practical learning, and real-world preparation, our study programmes give you the time, space, and support to grow – academically, socially, and professionally – so you’re ready for what comes next.

Our courses provide a stepping stone into Further Education, helping you build confidence, develop key skills, and explore your next direction before moving on to higher-level courses or employment. You’ll learn in small, friendly groups with expert tutors who understand that everyone’s journey is different.

Build Essential Skills
You’ll strengthen the core skills that employers and colleges value most, including communication, teamwork, organisation, confidence and planning – giving you a solid foundation for future success.

Explore Vocational Interests
You’ll have the chance to try out different subject areas such as Health & Social Care, Hospitality, Sport, Art & Design, and IT/Business. This helps you discover what motivates you and make informed decisions about your next steps.

Develop Employability
You’ll gain valuable employability skills, from understanding workplace expectations to creating your CV and practising interview techniques. Many courses also include introductory industry knowledge, helping you feel prepared for apprenticeships, further study, or the world of work.

join the journey

At Hull College we’re on a journey. One that will see us bring world class education and skills to Hull and East Yorkshire. We can’t wait for you to join us.

The course is genuinely interesting from day one and it feels like everything we learn is preparing us for real careers. It’s more than just classroom learning – it’s hands-on and meaningful. The facilities, like the clinical skills rooms and mock ambulance, make learning so much more realistic. If I had to describe my experience in three words? Awesome, awesome, and awesome!
