What is Applied Science?

What is Science? Science is about asking questions, exploring ideas, and using evidence to understand the world around us. The life sciences industry alone makes a huge contribution to the UK economy, with one in every 121 employed people working in the sector and over £13 billion added in 2023. With career routes across healthcare, forensics, pharmaceuticals, laboratory science, and research, the opportunities are vast for those who are curious, analytical, and ready to get stuck in.

Studying with us, you’ll dive deeper into the three core scientific disciplines – biology, chemistry, and physics – building a strong foundation in the principles that shape living systems, chemical reactions, and the physical laws of nature. Our Applied Science courses go beyond theory.

You’ll take part in regular laboratory sessions, developing essential practical skills such as planning and carrying out experiments, handling scientific equipment safely, recording accurate results, and analysing data to draw clear conclusions. These hands-on techniques are at the heart of real scientific work and will prepare you for the demands of modern lab-based roles.

With access to specialist laboratories, industry-standard equipment, and expert teaching, you’ll gain the knowledge, confidence, and practical experience to progress into employment or onto Higher Education – all while developing the mindset of a true scientist.
