Sport & UPS Students Inspire and Learn in South Africa
Sport and Uniformed Protective Services students took learning to a whole new level on an incredible 14-day trip to South Africa. From coaching local children in sport and dance to experiencing vibrant culture and breathtaking landscapes, this immersive adventure offered students a unique opportunity to develop practical skills, build confidence, and see first-hand the impact they can make in communities around the world.
During their trip, students visited multiple primary schools in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), leading sessions in basketball, football, rugby, cricket, netball, and dance. They also joined in traditional South African gumboot dancing, creating moments of laughter, learning, and genuine connection. The students’ energy and enthusiasm left a lasting impact on the local children, inspiring confidence, teamwork, and a love of sport.
what they said
Uniformed Protective Services student Mia said: “Dancing across the world, learning while teaching – it was such an incredible experience! The kids’ energy, creativity, and friendship brought us all so much joy. Teaching them to dance was a blast, and I loved seeing their faces light up as they learnt new moves. I had the time of my life, and I know these memories will stick with me forever!”
Sport student Brad added: “The trip was a big eye-opener! Coaching the kids here was fantastic – just seeing how excited they were to play sport was wonderful. It made me realise how lucky we are back home, and it was truly inspiring to see the positive impact sport can have on people’s lives.”
Students also had the opportunity to explore South Africa’s breathtaking landscapes with a weekend safari, spotting wildlife such as giraffes, cheetahs, and zebras, rounding off the adventure with memories to last a lifetime.
Clare Chaffe, Assistant Principal at Hull College, said: “This trip was yet another truly fantastic and worthwhile experience for all students involved. Beyond gaining practical skills and cultural understanding, they built confidence, teamwork, and resilience – all qualities that will benefit them in their future careers. Experiences like this show the real power of education beyond the classroom.”
The South Africa trip is just one example of how Hull College gives students the chance to explore the world, develop professionally, and make a positive impact on communities – all while creating memories they will treasure forever.
