Hands-On Experience in Spain

Electrotechnical students spent two unforgettable weeks in sunny Lebrija, Spain, taking their learning beyond the classroom and gaining real-world experience in the Spanish electrical industry. From installing solar panels and planning circuits to fitting tubing and carving wall tunnels, the students were fully immersed in practical work while picking up new techniques and approaches to their craft.

Alongside the technical skills, students embraced Spanish culture through lessons in the local language and city tours, making the experience both professionally and personally enriching. This international work experience was part of the Turing Scheme, giving Hull College students opportunities to develop global perspectives, enhance employability, and build confidence in a real-world environment.

what they said

Electrotechnical student Josh described the trip as “brilliant,” adding: “We gained loads hands-on experience in the workplace while learning new skills and techniques that will help us in our future careers. Having the tutors nearby gave us a solid sense of security, but being given the responsibility to handle things on our own really helped us develop independence and time management. I think we all learned that we can rely on ourselves and each other in all aspects of this trip.”

His classmate Ryan reflected on the cultural and professional insights gained: “The whole trip was amazing! I gained a wide range of hands-on experience, visiting different sites during my working hours. It was fascinating to see how people in Spain approach tasks differently to how we do back home. Overall, I really enjoyed the experience – it was fun being away from home with my fellow students and learning so much along the way.”

These placements not only strengthened our students’ technical skills but also taught them valuable lessons in teamwork, problem-solving, and adaptability. The experience left them inspired and more confident as they prepare for careers in the electrical industry.
Everyone at the college was incredibly proud of our Electrotechnical students for embracing every challenge and making the most of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The trip to Lebrija was a perfect example of how Hull College combines practical learning with cultural enrichment, preparing learners to succeed in the workplace.
