Course Overview
If you’re aiming for a future in the police, fire and rescue service, armed forces or NHS ambulance and paramedic sector, this course provides a strong foundation for progression. Delivered over two years, it gives you an in-depth understanding of how the uniformed protective services operate and the skills required to work effectively in frontline public service roles.
You’ll explore areas including criminology, behaviour and discipline, law and government, teamwork and leadership, physical preparation, emergency incident response, custodial care and global affairs. Alongside this, you’ll develop key transferable skills such as communication, resilience, decision-making under pressure, problem-solving and professional conduct — all essential for protective service careers.
Teaching is delivered by specialist staff with experience in policing, military preparation, emergency response, criminology, fitness and public service leadership. Their sector knowledge ensures learning is realistic, relevant and focused on preparing you for competitive recruitment processes.
Learning is active and practical, combining classroom study with simulated emergency scenarios, leadership challenges, fitness training, drill and outdoor expedition activities. You’ll have access to Hull College’s gym and regular use of Costello Stadium for physical conditioning, teamwork activities and performance testing.
Trips, enrichment activities and employer engagement are embedded throughout the programme, supporting your understanding of public service roles and helping you develop the behaviours and confidence expected in the sector.

Course Breakdown
Course Structure
This is a full-time, two-year programme, with attendance typically 3–4 days per week. Learning is delivered through a combination of classroom teaching and practical activities.
Learning includes:
• Classroom lessons covering law, criminology, government and global affairs
• Practical workshops and simulated emergency response scenarios
• Leadership and teamwork activities
• Fitness training in the college gym and at Costello Stadium
• Outdoor expedition and resilience-based activities

Assessment includes coursework, practical assessments, presentations, reports, case studies and externally assessed units, with ongoing feedback and support from specialist staff.

On successful completion, you can progress into further study, apprenticeships or careers across the uniformed protective services.

The qualification is equivalent to three A Levels and carries UCAS points, supporting progression to degrees such as Policing, Criminology, Paramedic Science, Public Services, Criminal Justice, Law, Sociology and Psychology.
