Course Overview

This apprenticeship prepares you to become a highly skilled Plate Welder, working on major infrastructure, engineering and manufacturing projects. You’ll learn to weld structural plate and components to internationally recognised quality standards using a range of manual arc welding processes.

Plate Welders play a vital role in sectors such as construction, marine, defence, transport, energy and heavy engineering. You’ll gain hands-on experience producing high-quality welds across different materials and joint types, developing the precision, technical knowledge and safety awareness required in industry. By the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll be able to fabricate, construct or repair structural assemblies to exact specifications.

Maths and English at 4(C) or above

Course Units

You could develop knowledge and practical skills in:

Health, safety and environmental practices in welding

Interpreting technical drawings and welding specifications

Preparing plate and structural components for welding

Using manual arc welding processes including MMA, MIG/MAG, TIG and FCAW

Welding carbon steels, alloy steels and other material groups

Producing butt, fillet and T-joint weld configurations

Inspecting and testing weld quality

Working efficiently within engineering and fabrication environments

80% Practical
20% Theory

Course Structure

You will spend one day per week at Hull College, developing your technical knowledge and practical welding skills in specialist workshops.

The remaining four days per week will be spent with your employer, gaining real industry experience, applying your skills on live projects and learning directly from experienced professionals in the workplace.

Progression & Next Steps

On successful completion, you could progress into full-time employment with your current employer or secure skilled welding roles with other organisations within the fabrication, construction, engineering or manufacturing industries.
