Course Overview

This course will introduce you to the foundations of counselling skills, focusing on how supportive communication, self-awareness, and ethical practice can be used to help others effectively.

You’ll explore key counselling theories and approaches, gaining insight into how different models support individuals through listening, reflection, and structured helping relationships. Alongside theory, the course places strong emphasis on personal development, encouraging learners to reflect on their own values, beliefs, and communication styles.

A distinctive element of this course is its practical focus. Learners are required to demonstrate core counselling skills in a helping relationship, ensuring learning is grounded in real-world application. This may be achieved through a recorded role-play or observation by an appropriately qualified witness, helping to build confidence in applying skills sensitively and professionally.

The course also explores ethics, diversity, and boundaries, supporting safe and responsible use of counselling skills in a wide range of contexts. While this qualification does not train learners to become counsellors, it is ideal for those working in support roles or anyone wishing to strengthen listening, empathy, and interpersonal skills.

Delivered fully online, the course offers flexible learning that fits around work, caring responsibilities, or other commitments.

*Please note that this course is not accredited by BACP and so some further education providers will not accept this course as a precursor to the level 3 course.
