Course Overview
On this programme, you will learn how to prepare timber, operate a range of hand and power tools, and join pieces of wood together using techniques used by professional joiners every day. You will develop the fundamentals of the trade, including measuring, marking out, cutting, and assembling timber with accuracy, as well as maintaining your tools and understanding how a workshop or site operates.
You will gain plenty of hands-on experience in the workshop, working on real projects to build your confidence and practical skills, alongside theory lessons covering other trades, health, and safety. Throughout the programme, you will also develop transferable skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, precision, and attention to detail – essential for progressing to higher-level construction courses, apprenticeships, or entry-level roles in the industry.

Course Structure
The course is 35 weeks long and includes a mix of practical sessions in a workshop, classroom learning and on-line work. You will be assessed through a combination of practical assessments and theory tests. Along the way, you’ll get feedback and support to help you improve and succeed.
Progression & Next Steps
Completing this course gives you the opportunity to progress to further level study in either Site Carpentry or Bench Joinery. You could advance into a site based environment, building the skills and experience needed to work on real construction projects, or specialise in bench joinery, learning to create high quality manufactured pieces and preparing for a career in the joinery industry.
