Course Overview

This programme provides a solid introduction to the skills and knowledge needed for a career in the motor vehicle industry. It is designed to help you build confidence working in a garage environment, using tools and equipment correctly, and understanding the basic principles behind how vehicles operate. You will explore key topics such as engine components, braking systems, steering and suspension, tyres, electrics, and routine vehicle servicing.

Learning is delivered through a combination of classroom theory and practical workshop activities. In the workshop, you’ll gain hands-on experience carrying out basic maintenance tasks, identifying faults, and working safely around vehicles. Classroom sessions complement this practical work by developing your understanding of vehicle systems, automotive technology, and industry standards.

You will be assessed through practical tasks, written work, and online tests to demonstrate your growing skills and knowledge. On successful completion, you will be well prepared to progress onto Level 2 study in Automotive Maintenance and Repair or an automotive apprenticeship, providing a strong foundation for a career as a skilled technician.

Entry Requirements:

4 x GCSEs at grade 2(E) or above, including English

Course Structure

This course is delivered through a balanced mix of practical workshop sessions and classroom-based learning. You will spend much of your time developing hands-on skills by completing real automotive maintenance tasks such as basic servicing, routine checks, and component removal and refitting. Classroom lessons will support your practical work by helping you understand how vehicle systems operate and why safe working practices are essential in a garage environment.

Assessment is carried out through a combination of practical tasks, coursework assignments, and the successful completion of an online exam. This blended approach ensures you develop both the technical skills and knowledge required to progress confidently onto a Level 2 programme or an automotive apprenticeship.

Progression & Next Steps

After completing the Level 1 in Automotive Maintenance, you’ll be ready to progress onto a Level 2 automotive maintenance or vehicle repair programme, where you’ll further develop your technical knowledge and practical skills. Many learners also use this qualification as a stepping stone into an automotive apprenticeship, gaining real industry experience while continuing their training. Whichever route you choose, this Level 1 course provides a strong foundation for building a successful career in the motor vehicle industry.
