Course Overview

Applied Science (with Forensics) is designed for you if you enjoy studying a combination of biology, chemistry, and physics and want to explore how science is applied in real-world and forensic contexts. Delivered over two years, the course is equivalent to three A Levels and provides a strong foundation for progression to higher education or employment in the science sector.

You’ll study a wide range of science units across biology, chemistry, physics, and environmental science through theoretical learning, research tasks, and practical laboratory work. The variety of topics allows you to develop a broad spectrum of scientific knowledge and practical skills, while also giving you opportunities to explore areas of personal interest and specialism.

A key feature of the course is the inclusion of forensic science, which broadens your understanding of how scientific principles are used in investigative and legal contexts. You’ll also explore how science is applied in industry, helping you develop employability skills and gain valuable insight into scientific careers.

Assessment is mainly coursework-based, with some externally assessed units. This approach provides continuous assessment throughout the course, alongside experience of external examinations to help prepare you for university-level study. You’ll develop skills in analysis, independent research, and evaluation of practical work, building confidence in both academic and applied science.

You’ll also have opportunities to gain additional qualifications, such as Emergency First Aid at Work and the Award in Higher Level Studies, which provides extra UCAS points. Work experience and enrichment opportunities are built into the programme, supported by strong links with local employers and industry partners.
