triple distinction

When Tom Arran walked through the doors of Hull College in 2009 to begin his BTEC National Diploma in Photography, he had no idea just how far his creativity would eventually take him. Two years later, he graduated with a triple distinction – and a clear vision of the career he wanted to build.

But Tom wasn’t just studying photography; he was already living it. At just 17, he set up his own photography business, spending evenings and weekends shooting assignments while balancing the demands of college life. His drive, talent, and willingness to learn quickly set him apart.

After completing his diploma, Tom continued his progression through an Advanced Creative and Digital Media Apprenticeship with Hull College, becoming the first person in the country to undertake a photography-focused apprenticeship. It was a bold step that blended technical learning with real-world experience, giving him the perfect foundation to grow.

lifestyle photographer

Fast-forward more than a decade, and Tom is now an established commercial and lifestyle photographer based in Hull, running his thriving business, T Arran Photo.

His portfolio spans high-profile brands, global campaigns, and unique creative projects. His work has taken him across the UK and around the world to locations such as South Africa, Italy, and New York – where he photographed one of Adidas’ biggest product launches. Closer to home, he captured the remarkable story of Hull’s City of Culture year, documenting events that shaped the city’s creative identity.

Tom’s story is a powerful reminder that with drive, creativity, and the right support, your passion can take you anywhere.

The BTEC National Diploma was an amazing experience and a real step towards starting a career in the photography industry. I absolutely love my career, and I owe a great deal of it to Hull College.
