hull college to the world

For Helen Gill, a passion for creativity sparked a career that has taken her from the design studios of Hull College to global marketing teams – and ultimately to launching her own successful business. Her journey began with an NVQ Level 3 and an HNC Level 4 in Graphic Design at Hull College, qualifications that laid the groundwork for everything that followed.

Helen’s early career was spent as a graphic designer, where she built eight years of hands-on industry experience and refined her eye for detail, innovation, and visual storytelling. Her talent and work ethic soon opened the door to a senior marketing role, where she spent the next 12 years shaping strategic marketing plans, leading global teams, and driving digital transformation across international organisations.

Along the way, she designed packaging for products sold in major supermarkets including ASDA and Lidl, developed an award-winning database solution, and even reached the finals of the Hull and East Yorkshire Digital Awards in 2018.

Never one to stand still, Helen continued to invest in her own learning. Inspired by the solid foundation she’d built at Hull College, she went on to study with the Chartered Institute of Marketing – achieving both a Certificate in Professional Marketing (Digital) and a Level 6 Diploma, completing each with the highest pass rate.

Today, she is a chartered marketer, a tutor for the Oxford College of Marketing, and the founder of her own creative marketing company, HelloU Marketing. Reflecting on her journey, Helen credits Hull College with helping her take those vital first steps.

Helen’s story is a testament to where passion, learning, and determination can lead – and a true inspiration for the next generation of creatives and marketers.

The qualifications I gained at Hull College gave me a solid foundation and the practical experience I needed to move forward in my career. I will always be grateful to my tutors and Hull College for the opportunities they gave me.
