After completing the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Textiles at Hull College, Jodie went on to Leeds College of Art and is already making a splash with her designs exhibiting in Paris, Brussels and New York.

Why did you choose to study at Hull College?

The great facilities the College had to offer including a print room, dye lab, weaving looms and studio. Also the fact that the course was coursework-based and not exam-based.

What did/do you enjoy most about studying at Hull College?

Using the print room and dye labs

What has been your career path up until now?

After leaving Hull College, I went on to study Printed Textiles and Surface Pattern design at university.

What does your job involve?

I don't have a specific role at the minute as I am only just finishing university, but I am on a list for freelance at WHSmith.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

2016 was a busy year. In February I exhibited at Premiere Vision in Paris where I met Lemon Ribbon who I completed a placement with. I was shortlisted in a live brief with Tigerprint and also came second in a live brief with Hallmark where I won a cash prize and another placement. I also exhibited at Surtex NY as well as MoOD in Brussels, all with Leeds College of Art.

I was shortlisted for the Mollie Makes magazine handmade awards under the ‘Youth’ category and got to present future business ideas to the panel of Pinterest and Etsy, which was very exciting.

I also won a student award and bursary at The Textile Society. I have recently been highly commended by Paper Rose for a card competition for Paperchase.

What are your hopes and dreams for the future?

I would like to do a Masters in children's book illustration. I also would like my own business as a freelance illustrator and surface pattern designer.

Have your studies helped you to achieve your career aims?

Yes, if it wasn’t for my course I wouldn’t of had all of the opportunities made available to me or gained the awards I've won.

What would you say to inspire current and future students?

It is a really hard industry to get into so only do it if your heart is 100% into it.

This makes the long days and late nights and working weekends A LOT easier as you get to do what you love everyday. Also be yourself, so many people try to be someone else and reproduce others work and this doesn't really get you anywhere. Find out what you want and your style - this can take a while but once you've found it it will be worth it as designs with the makers personality shining through really stand out.
