Hull College is pioneering a new partnership with the University of Hull and Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust to offer young people a pathway into nursing.
The three organisations have worked together to create a new apprenticeship which has been designed to deliver a direct route into a career in the sector.
The course is believed to be the first of its kind in the country and applications for the initial 15 places are open now.
Hull College CEO Michelle Swithenbank said the partnership was part of the college’s employee-led approach which aims to ensure all students get the skills they need to secure the jobs they want.
“As a former nurse, I am passionate about helping young people embark on rewarding and successful careers in healthcare,” she said.
“We recognised that there was a need to deliver training linked to employment within the sector which is why we approached both the University of Hull and Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust.
“This gives students an excellent opportunity to begin an apprenticeship knowing that there is a career opportunity for them at the end of it.”
The apprenticeships are due to begin in September and it is hoped other colleges across the country will also adopt the scheme.
Professor Julie Jomeen, Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Hull, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Hull College and Hull & East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust on this new innovative career pathway.
“As a university we are always looking at ways to address the needs of the local population and NHS service providers and apprenticeship routes such as this, that guarantee a career pathway, do just that.”
It is hoped the new apprenticeship will help meet the need for the next generation of healthcare workers in the area.
Mike Wright, Chief Nurse, Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust said: “Nursing is such a rewarding career and we are delighted to be part of a partnership to help encourage people in Hull and East Yorkshire to train and develop locally, in a caring profession.
“This is a really exciting opportunity for us to work with the college and the University of Hull, to give young people different opportunities and enable them to start their careers with us at their local hospitals trust.”
With applications now open for the new apprenticeship, young people who are interested are being encouraged to apply now. More details are available online here.
