11th July 2019

It’s been a busy few weeks for everyone at Hull College, as we welcomed 1,600 year 10 students from 12 schools for their first taste of college life.

Maybe you were part of this year’s taster days, or you just want to know what they’re all about, well a taster day is a chance for you to sample a day in the life of a college student.

You will have the opportunity to explore our city centre campus, meet tutors and experience two lessons.

What happened this year?

This year, we did Taster Days a little differently. We wanted to give the year 10 students their own space, that was vibrant and fun. So, a marquee was erected at the front of the college to act as a meeting hub in between sessions and over lunch time.

Arrival - When students arrived, they were given a short introduction to the college and what taster days are all about.

Morning session - Students then went off to enjoy their first lesson of day, trying a variety of subjects from Criminology to Hair and Beauty.

Lunch - Hotdogs, pasta and cookies were on offer, as well as fun activities and free sunglasses!

Afternoon session - Students had the chance to experience another subject of their choice.

Departure – Everyone joined us back in the marquee and were greeted with ice pops and a video on the biggest screen we have at the college, displaying all the photos from the day.

Why attend a taster day?

As you enter the last two years of secondary school, you will be expected to make a huge decision about the next chapter in your life, juggling options like Sixth Form, an apprenticeship or college.

Do you know what you want to do after school?

Do you have a clear plan for your future?

Maybe you’re thinking of going to university...

Or perhaps, you’re just totally confused with the whole situation and are not really sure which way to turn.

That’s why attending a year 10 taster day is important.

A chance to try something new

There’s a whole heap of vocational on offer at Hull College in over 16 different industries, some offering a direct route to university

Many of our courses are delivered in real working studios or workshops, so it’s a chance to get hands on with specialist equipment and machinery.

You will also be learning from tutors who have dedicated years to their specific industry

Meet new people

From the course tutors to canteen staff, you’ll be meeting lots of new people. Some of our taster days are also mixed with other schools, which is a great opportunity to meet fellow students who may be applying for the same course as you, students who may just end up being your life-long friends!
