A new brand designed by a student is to be rolled out across Hull College Group in time for the start of the new term this September.

Third year design student Laura Jones won a competition to create the new identity and work with creative communications agency Pace.

The aim was to give students the opportunity to work to a real life brief as part of the college’s focus on delivering the skills needed by employers in the local area.

Michelle Swithenbank, CEO of Hull College, said: “We decided to open up the rebranding to our students as a competition so that they could gain experience of the type of creative briefs they can expect as professionals.

“The results are really impressive and it was really difficult to choose a winner, however, Laura’s design really stood out and will give our campuses a smart new look befitting of the maturity and freedom offered by the college environment."

“We work closely with employers to give our students excellent work experience opportunities to put them in the best possible position to find a job or move on to further training when they leave us.”

Students on design courses at Hull College were invited to take part in the rebranding competition for sites in Hull, Harrogate and Goole.

A final five were then selected and from this group, three were invited to pitch their designs.

This trio – Laura Jones, Lauren Jones and Mason Cook – was invited to work with Pace to produce their presentations, gaining valuable work experience.

They then presented to representatives from the college, including governors and members of the senior leadership team, with Laura Jones named the eventual winner.

All three students who made the final round of the design process were awarded professional-standard design tablets to recognise their work and support to their future career development.

As the winner, Laura Jones also received a laptop computer.

Laura said: “Working on a real project brief was a great opportunity and I can’t believe that my design was chosen.

“It’s going to be amazing to see it used around the college and I’m really proud that my work will be here to stay for years to come.

“I learnt a lot by taking part in the competition and working with Pace has given me some fantastic experience of working with a professional design team to complete the project.”
