5th April 2019

Motor vehicle students from Hull College have had an exciting yet challenging few months building an electric kit car from scratch to race in Hull city centre on Sunday 28th April.

The project, which started back in February, was an initiative developed by Greenpower to provide electric kit cars to young people, to encourage them to get involved in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects.

Funding support was received from Green Port Hull, which has helped towards the creation of the car and supports Green Port’s mission to offer pupils a creative way to learn about STEM subjects, inspiring them to peruse rewarding careers.

Suvanna, one of 5 students involved in the project said “We’ve worked together closely and it’s been great to have the support of each other when we’ve hit issues and needed to explore new ideas.”

Hull College have been involved in the race for two years and have three teams entered in this year.

Course tutor, Jason Surgey said “Students have learnt both the theory and practical aspects of building a car. They get to use the tools and techniques to bring it to life. It’s an inspiring and motivational project, and we’re delighted to be involved.”

We are also proud to announce that Hull College Group is supporting this event as an official sponsor, with the Queens Gardens Campus hosting catering stands, live streaming the races and holding an exhibition of photographs in Hull School of Art and Design.

The event is free to attend, so come along and see the teams in action on 28th April. The fun starts from 10am and racing from 11am.
