Teams of construction students have been sharing their skills with the city.

Diy Sos

Hull College Construction department are working with the local communities on a number of projects. Students, supported by their tutors, have been working hard and sharing their skills in welding, plastering, painting, joinery and bricklaying.

DIY SOS

Four female students and two tutors from Hull College took the time to help out on the BBC One series DIY SOS when the team recently came to Hessle to transform a local family’s home.

Students got stuck in straight away, donating their time and skills.

During the build, they worked alongside local tradespeople and suppliers, which offered an insight to how their existing skills and knowledge can be applied to industry.

Joining the project provided the students with an experience of a lifetime, not only did they get to work with celebrities and trained professionals, they also worked hard to turn a family’s life around.

Following the success of the Big Build, the Hull College team have been invited back to help out on another DIY SOS project coming soon!

Rooted in Hull

Students have been involved in an ongoing urban agriculture project to rejuvenate a derelict dry dock near Drypool Bridge, with Rooted in Hull.

With a mission to inspire local people to improve their diet, the project aims to help them learn about fresh local food.

Students are working alongside other volunteers such as local residents, ex-offenders and homeless people.

The project consists of a number of different shipping containers that have been transformed into various spaces, including working kitchens and bakeries that Hull College Catering students can use. The structures can be easily moved if the council need the land back

The College are a key partner, working alongside Hobson and Porter to provide students with real work experience and helping them to become rounded citizens of Hull.

College Revamp

Current students are helping to refresh and revamp the college.

This has involved plastering, painting and even building new patrician walls.

Support to complete this work has been kindly donated by local companies such as Dulux who have donated paint and Port and West who have donated carpets.

The work is due to be completed during half term, which means staff and students will be returning to a fresh working environment after Easter.
