Find out more about your Student Union team

Some of you may already know about Hull College Student Union, seen them around the building or in the second floor student areas. But we felt that a proper ‘meet the members’ would be a fun way for you to get to know the team!

First up is Ashley Barratt.

Role: Equality and Diversity Officer

Why did you join the Student Union?

My future aspiration is to be in the Police Force and I believe this position is a great start towards a long career, but I also feel like this position offers so much more. This role is more than just a label, this role is a chance to make a difference in people’s lives and help those who need it.

I want to make a difference to people’s lives, promote and support a more inclusive and tolerant society and demonstrate my commitment to equality and social justice. I felt like the best way to do this is to be at the heart off it all as the Equality and Diversity Officer.

What is your favourite part of the job?

This is a hard question as there is so much I love about this role. Out of all the free pizza, freebies and the amazing events we put on, I have to say that the best part of this role is meeting the students and seeing the talent and ideas that fills the corridors of Hull College.

What are your hobbies and interests?

I suppose I could be seen as a boring person as I work a lot. However, I would have to disagree!

I meet hundreds of new people every week and this is what I love to do. Apart from the Student Union, I work in my village shop and I work for a company called EasyBuy. These jobs allow me to see and talk to lots of different people with different views, different wants and different needs. I get to help many people on a daily basis; this is why I want to pursue a career in the police force.

So, I may sound boring when I say I work a lot, but I get so many new and interesting challenges every day, how can that be boring.

Apart from work, I do like going out with my friends. I am a very sociable person, or I would like to think, so I like to go out a lot with my friends. That could be a night out around the town, or it could be a small catch-up.

Next, here’s Erika Vaitkeviciute.

Role: Marketing Officer

Tell us a bit about yourself.

Hi everyone! I bet that the first thing you thought about me was ‘wow what kind of surname is this?’ Yes, I know, it’s really long surname, but I love it. I’m originally from Lithuania and I moved to England in summer 2016.

What does your role involve?

I am mostly responsible for listening, helping and supporting students, as well as Student Union advertisement (social media pages, posters, leaflets, etc.). However, this year your Students' Union team is incredible, so we share tasks and help each other as much as we can, to make sure that all students have a great experience in college.

Why did you join the Student Union?

When I heard about elections, I knew that I needed to take part because I thought that it would be a great chance to support students and make their experience in college better. So, I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who voted for me and gave me a chance to be a part of SU.

What’s your favourite part of the role?

My favourite part of it would be everything I do! I know it sounds strange, but I love creating marketing materials, I love communicating with students and helping them, listening to their brilliant ideas, organising and holding events, attending meetings, organising competitions and a lot more. This role not only gives me a great experience, but it also, gives me a chance to meet so many different people and be able to help and support them.

Do you have any hobbies or interests?

I've got a few interests: listening to music, swimming, reading books and watching movies. I like to read romance books and watch horror movies, because I think that love stories in books are better, so are scary stories in the movies. My hobbies are photography, cooking and singing

Tell us about your likes and dislikes.

I would say, that I love the snow, but I hate the rain. I like pets, but I hate insects. And last but not least, I love high heels, but I hate to walk in them!

Last but not least, Mohammed Salih.

Role: Student Union President

Why did you join the Student Union?

I wanted to help solve students’ problems and make sure that all student voices are heard, as well as finding solutions to their problems. That’s also what motivated me to become a student voice member too.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

I enjoy communicating with students by supporting them and listening to their problems.

Do you have any likes or dislikes?

I like working with people, solving problems and being active. My dislikes have to be swimming, cold weather and kiwis.
