Students have been helping out with a performance at Hull Truck Theatre, that tells the true-life story of the local lad who went on to become David Bowie's sideman.

Hull College Group provides an ever-increasing range of vocational courses in further education, higher education, part time study and apprenticeships. With a strong commitment to preparing students for the world of work, emphasis on developing employability skills alongside a main qualification is key.

An integral part of all of Hull Colleges study programmes is to immerse students in work placements and live briefs. The aim of these placements is to give students the opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge to real life scenarios, and this is exactly what happened when the College collaborated with the production of Turn and Face the Strange – Mick Ronson the Spider from Hull.

This third instalment of the unique theatre show tells the true-life story of the local lad who went on to become David Bowie’s sideman.

Thirty five students across several subject areas, from further and higher education courses, have been sharing their creative talents in the production of ten shows that are taking place at Hull Truck Theatre.

Level 2 and 3 Performing Arts students will perform alongside the band for the finale tracks in the show, with a dance choreographed by Kerrie Marsh. Entwining their skills, the dancers will wear costumes designed and made by Level 3 Fashion and Design students.

Shadowing lighting and sound professionals will be the role of the Foundation Degree Live Events Production students, as they set up the technical elements, whilst musicians from Hull College play in the foyer during a select number of shows.

The work of Foundation Degree Fine Art students is being exhibited at Hull Truck Theatre for the duration of the show, and will be assessed as part of their Exhibiting Practice Module.

Alongside the work placements, the production team is providing a range of masterclasses for Hull College Music students, including different guitar techniques and how to adapt and arrange music. There will also be a creative writing session for students on the inaugural Foundation Degree in Creative Writing, a brand new offering that starts September 2019.

Lucy Francis, Director of Faculty in Arts and Creative Industries at Hull College, said: “As well as providing quality teaching, Hull College has developed strong links with local businesses and organisations to provide students with work placements and live briefs. The collaboration with Turn and Face the Strange is a fantastic opportunity for all students involved to apply their knowledge and skills and gain experience that will prepare them for work.

“The support provided by the production team to the students has been first-class and we’re honoured to be involved with telling the story of one of Hull’s most inspiring and influential individuals.”
