Hull College School of Construction welcomed the arrival of the Hull and Barnsley Railway Carriage No 58 for an exciting restoration project.

Working closely with North Yorkshire Moors Railway and the Hull and Barnsley Railway Stock Fund, students will be restoring Carriage No 58, the sole surviving example of a passenger carriage of this type. Dubbed Project 58, and recognising the groundbreaking nature of the collaboration, support has been provided by the LNER Coach Association and North Yorkshire Moors Railway to enable the project to commence.

The Hull and Barnsley Railway Stock Fund purchase, maintain and restore examples of rolling carriages that once travelled on the Hull and Barnsley line. The carriage was originally built in Hull over 100 years ago and will be the first time it has returned since the Hull to Barnsley line was closed in the 1950’s. It saw almost 45 years as a passenger carrying vehicle, after which it was converted into a mobile engineer's workshop.

Students will be working to make the carriage structurally sound, whilst also restoring specialist fittings and features. The project will lead to interdepartmental collaboration within the college, as there will be opportunities for plumbing and engineering subject areas to restore and rebuild specific elements of the carriage.

Darren Storrer, Assistant Director of Curriculum for Construction said: “We are excited to be involved with the project because of the benefits it will have on our learners. They will be working on a live brief for a real client, whilst restoring a piece of local history.”

“It has also inspired a lot of learners who have struggled with their attendance. Project 58 has given them something to latch on to, that they can be proud of.”

Not only is this a great community project to be involved with, but the students will be able to see the joinery techniques that were originally used on the carriage during the period it was built.
