Former student has an exciting and ambitious job role that has seen him travel across the globe and trial the very latest in yacht engineering technology.

Richard Blowman has a career many would envy. Not only has he recently been accredited as a ‘fellow’ with chartered status by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology, an incredible achievement in itself, but he also works as the Chief Engineer and Technical Superintendent for a number mega yachts, rubbing shoulders with some of the wealthiest communities in the world.

It’s an exciting and ambitious role that has seen Richard travel across the globe and trial the very latest in yacht engineering technology.

After working in the merchant shipping sector for 10 years as a Chief Engineer, Richard took the next step to develop his skill set and decided to gain a recognised qualification.

Following a large period of his career exploring exotic continents, Richard realised the value of studying close to home. Hull College had just what he needed, value for money coupled with the flexibility to continue to work. Richard went on to achieve an Honours Degree in Engineering Technology, which opened up a whole new world of opportunities, including further recognition in his field and a new-found ability to delve into other engineering fields.

Richard said “The option to study close to home was a great benefit. The fees were reasonable and the commitment and dedication of the lecturers allowed me to develop throughout the duration of the course.”

Since completing the course, Richard proudly had the honour of being awarded Chartered Status and an accreditation by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technologies, which were both aided greatly by achieving a degree with Hull College.

He added “It’s a great honour to be awarded chartered status in an engineering field and I am extremely proud of that achievement.”
