We invited a diner to write a review of their first-time experience at HU1 Riverside, read on to see what they thought!
Walking through the main entrance, I was greeted with a warm welcome from the head waiter who showed me and my dining partner to our table.
The table for two was laid professionally, with ample cutlery and glassware, as well as ambient candle lighting and a bottle of chilled water.
Our server for the evening, Millie, handed over the drink's menu. We opted for a glass of merlot and a zinfandel rosé. We were then offered a freshly baked, crusty bread roll, which to my delight was still warm.
The evening menu was varied, with a choice of three starters, four mains and three desserts, all of which included vegetarian options.
After our order was taken, we were served a plate of mixed appetizers which consisted of smoked salmon, prawns and chicken lollipops. This was the perfect touch to satisfy a hungry appetite before the starters arrived!
I chose the crab cake to start, which was served with mussels, cockles, verjus and buttered samphire. This dish truly was a taste of the sea! The saltiness of the cockles complimented the softer flavours of the rich crab cake, which sat on a bed of samphire that boasted its own distinctively crisp and salty taste.
For the main, I ordered the BBQ rump of lamb with creamed cabbage and potatoes. My eyes lit up as the dish was placed in front of me! There were three generous cuts of lamb that smelt divine.
In between courses, Millie was tending to our table by removing and resetting cutlery, all the time making sure our experience was as enjoyable as possible.
To finish the evening, and partly due to being intrigued by the name, I ordered the apple crumble Yorkshire pudding. The warm mix of apple filling sat inside a crispy Yorkshire pudding, topped with an oaty crumble and finished off with a sweet portion of fresh custard.
The evening was such an enjoyable experience. It was fantastic to see how the catering and hospitality students worked together. They proved that the dining experience is a journey; food does not just arrive at a table, every step is considered and communicated. It’s a huge team effort.
