Our 14-16 College learners enjoyed a trip to St. Paul’s Boxing Academy in north Hull last week.

The link with the Amateur Boxing Club was set up by Enrichment Mentor Karl Boddy, who is responsible for organising a variety of enrichment activities for our younger learners, meaning there’s always something familiar to enjoy or a new skill to be learnt. These activities are fun, relaxed, social and Covid-safe.

Throughout the sessions, learners will be trained to improve their technical and tactical boxing skills, along with receiving mentoring, support and guidance from coaches to improve their lifestyle choices and identify potential career prospects. Feedback from learners was hugely positive, whilst St. Paul’s described our learners as “the best school group we have ever had.”

Reflecting after the first session, which saw 12 participants from Year 10 and Year 11, Karl said: “The boxing sessions provide students with the opportunity to healthily express their negative emotions.”

As a result of the experience, three learners have already signed up for evening classes, with another one joining a club in Bridlington. They will now complete mentor education sessions in the newly refurbished facility, alongside boxing fitness.

14-16 College provides a specialised vocational curriculum for focused students wanting to broaden their horizons from Year 10 onwards.

Our students are able to choose vocational subjects in the areas that interest them alongside their core GCSEs in English, maths and science subjects. Specialist vocational facilities and industry-trained and experienced tutors provide an unrivalled grounding in their chosen vocation, where they are able to develop the skills needed to succeed. The College provides an alternative choice for dedicated students with the commitment and focus to succeed.
