The BTEC level 2 Award in Applied Science is a recognised qualification which carries the same weight as the traditional GCSE Single Award Science and can be used to access careers in a range of vocational areas including health and education.* You will receive a grade between pass (GCSE grade 4, C) and distinction* (GCSE grade 9, A*).
The BTEC award assesses the three core science subject areas of chemistry, physics and biology through a range of internal coursework assessments (75% of final grade) and an exam (25% of final grade). It will provide you with the opportunity to learn the fundamental concepts in each area of science and have the opportunity to receive feedback on your coursework so you can make improvements in the future.
It will also give you with the opportunity to improve or renew your study skills, as its assessments are based around describing concepts, researching theories in science and report writing. We will also build on examination technique to prepare for the March exam, which you can also retake in May to improve your grade.
*some higher level courses may specifically require a GCSE, such as GCSE biology. If you are in doubt it is advisable to contact your intended destination (e.g. university or employer) for confirmation.
