Hull College has recently been successful in its application to open a Studio School in the city of Hull for young people aged 14-19. The school will be expected to open in September 2012.
A Studio School is a new type of school model designed to equip young people with the knowledge, skills and experiences they need to succeed in life and work. The Studio School will have a bold new practical approach to learning involving enterprise projects and paid work. Key employability and life skills will underpin all the activities of a Studio School.
Education will be taken out of the traditional classroom setting with students learning through project work carried out in the school and in the community. All students will have a ‘personal coach’ who will meet with them on a one to one basis every fortnight to develop their own personalised learning plan. All students will experience work through weekly work placements.
Students will spend a significant portion of their weekly time in real work placements.
14-16
Students in Years 10 and 11 will participate in a minimum of four hours unpaid work experience each week.
16-19
Students in Years 12-13 (ages 16-19) will participate in at least two days paid employment a week.
This will ensure that all students develop the necessary employment skills to enter the world of work once they have completed their studies.
The Studio School will have 300 students aged 14-19 with approximately 75 students in each year:
14-16
Year 10 (Age 14-15)
Year 11 (Age 15-16)
16-19
Year 12 (Age 16-17)
Year 13 (Age 17-18)
These year groups will then be sub-divided into separate classes. This will provide a small school environment in which every young person will be able to access the tailored support they need.
Students will be taught the national curriculum and will undertake the key qualifications including GCSEs in Maths, English, Science and IT.
Students will also have the opportunity to study vocational options in a range of subject areas. These will be confirmed in agreement via consultation with employers and parents (these could include subjects such as Construction and Motor Vehicle and other subjects such as Graphic Design, Media Technology, Performing Arts, Business and Catering).
The Studio School will be based on the Queen’s Gardens Campus. Students may also benefit from access to specialist facilities at the College’s other main sites, e.g. Queen’s Gardens, Park Street, the KC Stadium or Cannon Street.
We would like to know how many parents in the city are interested in sending their child to the Studio School in 2012 or in future years. Please be aware that at this stage parents are just expressing an interest and can change their mind at a later date. To register your interest for your child, please email DCollier@hull-college.ac.uk with the following details:
Registering an interest is not an application and does not guarantee a place at the Studio School. We will keep you informed of the application process as we proceed.
