Learning and Skills Council Chief Executive visits Hull College

Geoff Russell, Chief Executive of the Learning and Skills Council (LSC), and, with effect from the 1st April 2010, Chief Executive of The Skills Funding Agency (SFA) met managers and learners during a visit to Hull College.

The LSC is the national government body that is responsible for ensuring the availability of high quality education and training for young people and adults.

Welcomed by Eric Twigger, Hull College’s Chair of Governors, Geoff Russell was given an overview of the College, which has over 33,000 learners on a variety of programmes across a range of campuses. A meeting then followed to discuss the theme of growth and efficiency within the further education sector. Geoff Russell commented:

“It is an absolute pleasure to visit Hull College, I generally enjoy visiting college sites and Hull College always impresses me with its excellent standards. The College demonstrates outstanding ambition and entrepreneurship, which are valued and important traits, especially during challenging times. I would like to thank the College for hosting a most stimulating and gastronomically satisfying visit. I was very impressed!”

Following this meeting, Geoff Russell enjoyed lunch in Hull College’s own silver service Charlottes Restaurant, prepared and served by learners on the Level 2 NVQ Catering course. He spoke with learners about their experiences at the College, Nicola Vessey, 18, commented,

“It was really great to cook for an external guest; it ups the pressure a little bit and makes you concentrate that bit harder. He asked me if I liked my course here at the College and I told him how brilliant it is here, he also said he was really impressed with the roast lamb we made for him.”

16 year old Demi Anderson, was equally enthusiastic.

“I was part of the team that served Mr Russell, it was a great experience and really made us think about our presentation skills. When I leave the College, I want to own my own restaurant and opportunities like this give me the confidence to know that I can do it!”

According to Dr Elaine McMahon CBE, Chief Executive and Principal of Hull College, Geoff Russell’s visit to the College was a mutually significant one,

“This visit from the Chief Executive of the LSC, and his Executive Assistant, provided a real opportunity for Hull College to explore future strategic opportunities to align the College’s ambitions for delivering education and training to the communities it serves and to help contribute to the SFA, LSC and government departments strategic priorities”
