The City of Hull
Hull is one of Yorkshire’s key cities and is the tenth largest city in the country. Hull has developed significantly and is now emerging as a great European waterfront city. It is at one of the most exciting points in its history and is well on its way to being ‘the next big thing.’ Hull is host to a huge student population and facilities in the city are geared to the needs of this population.
Hull’s revival is breathing new life into all sectors across the city-region. The City boasts several iconic new buildings and landmarks such as The Deep, The BBC, our own Horncastle Theatre and Media Centre,The World Trade Centre and the KC Stadium.The Museums quarter, The Red Gallery and The Ferens Art Gallery all occupy some of the many fine Victorian buildings to be found in the city. It is this blend of the historic with the contemporary which makes Hull such an invigorating place to stroll around.
Hull is a great place to live, and the cost of living is amongst the lowest in the UK. City living has blossomed with apartments in historic old buildings and new riverside complexes, all at a much more affordable cost than many other cities.
The ‘old town’ area is rapidly developing as a desirable place to live and work, with a plethora of new creative industries establishing in and around the High Street, and good employment opportunities for graduates.
New bars, restaurants and shops are springing up in and around the city centre, offering a wealth of tastes, sights and sounds. The arts and cultural scene is also booming – music, entertainment, theatre and arts are all thriving in Hull. A rapidly growing local and student ethnic population is adding a richness to the environemmnt, culture and activities in the city.
Live music venues offer a myriad of choices and Hull’s clubs host some of the nation’s best club nights including Deja vu and Hed Kandi. Recent bands to play the city include Babyshambles, Kasabian and the Arctic Monkeys. Popular student nights can be found at The Welly Club, The Piper, and the legendary Adelphi Club, which feature live bands.
Renowned galleries such as The Ferens and arts organisations with international reputations like Hull Time Based Arts add to the cultural quarter. The Hull Truck Theatre, nationally and internationally renowned under the artistic direction of John Godber is a must for new and challenging productions. Hull Truck has relocated to a new state of the art theatre. Hull New Theatre is a regional centre for touring shows. The local art-house cinema, Hull Screen, shows foreign and cult films and the city also has two multi-screen cinemas. The Hull Film Fesival is internationally known and respected as is the Humber Mouse Literature Festival which brings in eminent writers from the UK and further afield. The annual Freedom Festival promotes local arts and cultural diversity with HSAD students playing a significant part in the event.
