A BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma is a practical, work-related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based in realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. As well as learning about the theories behind scientific investigation, you develop the skills you need to start a career.
What subjects will I study?
The course is designed to give you detailed understanding of Applied Science and the Application of Science to real situations in the workplace. During the 2 years you will study a wide range of units, including:

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science (Chemistry) is a 2 year full-time course and is equally suitable for school leavers or mature students.
How is the course assessed?
All the units are assessed through assignments and projects. Each unit is graded as a Pass, Merit or Distinction and at the end of the course an overall grade for the qualification is awarded.
Where is the course available?
Classes are available at the Queen%u2019s Gardens site. The college has large, well-equipped library facilities open to all students and include access to computers, CD-ROMs, Internet, videos periodicals, etc. There are also resource bases in many areas which are available to all students.
What can I do at the end of the course?
The Level 3 Diploma carries the equivalent UCAS points of 3
A-levels in Applied Science (a maximum of 420 UCAS points) which on completion allows you to choose whether to get a job straight away or go to university first.
BTEC Diplomas are particularly valued by employers due to the way in which the application of science is studied
If you want to get a job straight away you could work in:
• a hospital laboratory
• a research laboratory
• a quality control laboratory
• a laboratory in a school, college or university
If you decide to go to university or college you could take a degree in subjects such as:
• Biomedical Science
