Qualifications required

Due to Health & Safety Regulations, work as a Port Operative cannot commence until 18yrs of age It may be that the candidate may have commenced work in a logistics or ports company before the age of 18 and have worked as (say) a warehousing and storage operative. Course Length

This depends on individual circumstances and experience, but most apprentices will complete the framework within 12 months

Apprenticeship in Port Operations

Description

This is a new Apprenticeship for the Ports Industry and has been created out of the Port Operations National Occupational Standards (NOS). The Apprenticeship will not be available until April 2012, when it is anticipated all accreditation and validation procedures have been completed.

This Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) comprises of:
1. Competence Based Element - Level 2 Certificate in Port Operations
2. Technical Certificate – Port Operations
3. Functional Skills - Communication Level 1, or Key Skills – Communication Level 1
Application of Number Level 1, or Key Skills – Application of Number level 1
Functional Skills – Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Level 1, or Key Skills – – Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Level 1

For Apprentices taking this apprenticeship, employed status is the preferred route. Employed Status means that in order to complete the Intermediate Apprenticeship, the candidate must be employed by an employer working in the sector.

Progression

: Further progression opportunities reflect the range of career options within a ports and logistics environment, which could include:
• IOSH Managing Safely in Ports
• Advanced Apprenticeship in the Supervision of Port Operations (not available until 2012)
• Foundation Degree in Ports and Logistics
