Many engineering companies operate a machine shop style of component manufacture, utilising various skills from hand fitting to complex CNC machines. This Apprenticeship follows a programme of training that develops the necessary hand and machining skills required to work within this sector and to the industry standards.
The purpose of an Advanced Apprenticeship in Mechanical Manufacture is to provide a candidate with the skill set required to gain technician level within the manufacturing sector.
1. NVQ2 Performing Engineering Operations (PEO)
Units include:
Working safely in an engineering environment
Working efficiently and effectively in engineering
Using and communicating technical information
Producing components using hand fitting techniques
Preparing and using lathes for turning operations
Preparing and using milling machines
Wiring and testing electrical equipment and circuits
Maintaining electrical equipment/systems
Following the off-the-job training and on successful completion of NVQ2 PEO the candidate returns to their sponsoring employer and progresses onto NVQ level 3 in Manufacturing Engineering.
The units for the Level 3 NVQ are selected by the
employer taking into account the candidates role
within the workplace.
2. Technical Certificate
Year One - The BTEC National Certificate in Engineering is a theory based technical certificate at Level 3 but if required the College can deliver the skills based City &
Guilds 2800 (Mechanical Manufacturing) Level 3. Year Two Apprentices can follow one of two pathways which specialise in either Mechanical units or Electrical units dependent on the chosen discipline.
3. Functional Skills
Application of Number Level 2, Communications Level 2, ICT Level 2, Working with Others Level 2 and Improving Own Learning Performance Level 2
On successful completion of the Advanced Apprenticeship candidates have the opportunity to progress onto HNC/Foundation Degree, leading to the possibility of further study for BEng.
