Many engineering companies have an in house drawing and design department or they outsource to external companies. This Apprenticeship follows a programme of training that develops the necessary skills to carry out 2D and even 3D drawings of manufactured products. The hand and machining skills learnt in the first year will provide an appreciation of the need for accurate engineering drawings and
technical data.
The purpose of an Advanced Apprenticeship in Technical Support is to provide a candidate with the skill set required to gain technician level within a drawing office environment.
This is a three/four year programme dependent on company requirements and units chosen, with the first year providing off-the-job training at Hull College followed by two years on-the-job NVQ level 3 training.
1. NVQ2 Performing Engineering Operations (PEO)
Units include:
Working safely in an engineering environment
Working efficiently and effectively in engineering
Using and communicating technical information
Producing components using hand fitting techniques
Preparing and using lathes for turning operations
Preparing and using milling machines
Wiring and testing electrical equipment and circuits
Maintaining electrical equipment/systems
Following the off-the-job training and on successful completion of NVQ2 PEO the candidate returns to their sponsoring employer and progresses onto NVQ level 3 in Engineering Technical Support.
The units for this Level 3 NVQ are selected by the Employer taking into account the candidates role within the workplace.
2. Technical Certificate
The BTEC National Certificate in Engineering is a theory based technical certificate at level 3 and candidates may also wish to study a C&G skills based CAD course.
This is a two year day release course for technicians. Year two can follow one of two pathways which specialise in either Mechanical units or Electrical units dependent on the chosen discipline.
3. Functional Skills
Application of number Level 2, Communications Level 2, ICT Level 2, Working With Others Level 2 and Improving Own Learning Performance Level 2
On successful completion of the Advanced Apprenticeship candidates have the opportunity to progress onto HNC/Foundation Degree, leading to the possibility of further study for BEng.
